Motivation and Objectives

Transformations of artefacts like models, schemata, programs, or software architectures provide a uniform and systematic way to express and reason about the evolution of software systems. For example, in the context of forward engineering, the transition between different abstraction levels (like analysis, design, and implementation) can be described in terms of transformations, like refinement relations or automatic  generation of models or code. In reverse engineering, transformations are used to build abstractions from implementations, e.g., by detecting design pattern or clichés. Within one level, transformations can be used for expressing  refactoring and evolution of models or dynamic reconfiguration of architectures.

This workshop aims at providing a forum for the discussion of transformational techniques in software evolution, with particular focus on approaches that are generally applicable throughout the software development life-cycle. We solicit submissions based on any approach to transformation of structures (not only graph transformation), or papers comparing different approaches. More specific problems that shall be discussed on the basis of these general approaches include

Workshop Format and Invited Speakers

The workshop is planned as a mixture of two invited talks, brief presentations of position papers, and discussion. Invited talks will  be given by Stuart Kent and Michael Löwe.

Proceedings

A volume of  the Electronic Notes in Theoretical Computer Science (ENTCS) containing revised versions of  all accepted papers will be prepared and distributed during the workshop.

Submission Information

Participants will be selected on the basis of a short position paper  (of  3 to 8 pages) in  the style of the Electronic Notes in Theoretical Computer Science (ENTCS), where the workshop proceedings will be published. Please follow the Instructions for Authors
and find the relevant macro file for volume 72.4.

Papers should be sent in pdf or postscript format to Reiko Heckel (reiko@upb.de) with a CC to Tom Mens (tommens@vub.ac.be)  and Michel Wermelinger (mw@di.fct.unl.pt). Please include in the body of the e-mail the authors' names, addresses, affiliations and the paper's title and abstract.

Important Dates

June 20, 2002:  Submission of position papers
July 15, 2002: Notification of acceptance
September 5, 2002: Revised versions due
October 11th and 12th, 2002: Date of the workshop
